Columbia Gorge News www.columbiagorgenews.com Wednesday,May5,2021 7 OBITUARIES PA I D N O T I C E S Gerald "Jerry" Gard Gerald "Jerry" Veryl Gard passed away on April 15, 2021, at Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, Ore. Jerry was born on Jan. 16, 1942, and was 79 years of age at the time of his passing. Jerry was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, to Veryl M. Gard and Katherine A. (Schwaesdall) Gard. He is survived by his two siblings, Gerald "Jerry" Melvin L. Gard, who lives in Friend, Ore., and Linda M. Thompson, who lives in Gresham, Gard Ore. Jerry lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, for the first four years of his life. They moved to Oregon in 1946 and resided in Madras, Ore., Condon, Ore., and finally settled in The Dalles, Ore. Jerry graduated from The Dalles High School in 1961. He returned to Fairbanks after his graduation from high school. He worked in a sporting goods store and spent time with his grandfather, Andy Schwaesdall, and hunted with his friends. He spent a few years in Alaska before he joined the Navy in 1964 during the Viet Nam War. He was a medic in the Navy. He was involved in active warfare and was wounded with shrapnel in his back. He received two Purple Hearts. He returned from Viet Nam in 1968. He attended college for four years at Eastern Oregon College. After finishing college, he returned to Hood River, Ore., where his parents resided. He worked for the Forest Service from 1972-1996 and he enjoyed being out in the forest and putting out fires. He was a long time resident of Hood River, from 1972-2021. He is survived by nieces Tammy Krause of Portland, Ore., and Alicia Sparks of Dayton, Ore.; grandnieces Katherine Krause, Sophia Sparks, and Ava Sparks; nephew Cody Krause; nephew Kim Krause; nephew Greg Sparks; and cousins Ralph and Sally Schwaesdall of Idaho. Jerry will forever be loved and missed. A graveside service for Gerald will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 at Idlewilde Cemetery, 980 Tucker Road, Hood River. During his time at the ODFW, he worked alongside local landowners and the state to protect and enhance fisheries on the lower Deschutes and Hood Rivers as well as on the lakes and other streams in his district. He worked to facilitate the purchase of land along the lower Deschutes River and to im- prove riparian areas. Jim, along with other biologists, studied the impact of hatchery genetics on Hood River, the data from which is still being studied today. He also worked to improve and increase access to the many different streams and lakes in the north central region of the state. This included stocking new mountain lakes and the construction of Taylor Lake to create convenient fishing access to The Dalles, Ore. Jim married Linda B. Newton on Aug. 16, 1969, in La Grande, Ore. They lived in Klamath Falls, Portland, and Pine Hollow, Ore., but spent most of their married life living in The Dalles. Jim loved to hunt and golf, but his favorite pastime was fishing on the Deschutes. An avid outdoorsman, he and Linda floated several Oregon rivers over the years, including the John Day and the Owyhee. For the last 20 years, they have spent winters in Arizona surrounded by friends, and summers in Oregon where they could enjoy the outdoors. Jim is survived by his wife Linda, Wilsonville; son Tygh and Ambria, Sherwood; son Bradly and Katie, Tualatin; and grandchildren Ellise, Claire, Audrey and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jack Newton. A graveside service will be held at IOOF Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road in The Dalles at 11 a.m. on May 15. Face masks and social distancing are required. Yolanda Martinez Yolanda Martinez falleció en Mid- Columbia Medical Center el 19 de abril de 2021 en the Dalles, Oregon. Yolanda nació el 8 de octubre de 1959 en Morelia Michoacán hija de J. He was born July 31, 1925, in Eightmile, Ore., to Leroy and Maree DeMaris. The family moved to the Goldendale, Wash., area when he started school. On his 18th birthday, he married Helen Ledford. He worked in the lumber industry until he retired and was the head saw filer at SDS in Bingen, Wash., for many years. He loved his friends, music, dancing, the 49ers, NASCAR and building and fixing things. He was always glad to help anyone who needed it. After re- tirement, he and Helen enjoyed traveling to Eastern Oregon. Helen passed away in 2012 after 69 years of marriage. He was born in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 18, 1946, the first of two much-loved sons to James W. and Arline A. Newton. He moved from Vernonia, Ore., to Bend, Ore., in 1953 at age 6, where he spent the rest of his James childhood. Newton Jim attended Central Oregon Community College for two years before transferring to Oregon State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Wildlife Management in 1970. He served for six years in the Army National Guard and began a career with the Oregon feel it.
